Nashville – Dr. Jim Byford, who has been a mentor and friend to many people associated with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, as well as those affiliated with other state and national organizations, was honored by receiving the top annual award presented by the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA).
The presentation came at the 65th Annual SEAFWA Conference banquet that was hosted by the TWRA in Nashville.
Byford was given the Clarence W. Watson Award. It is the most prestigious award given by SEAFWA and is presented to the career individual who, in the opinion of the Award Committee, has made the greatest contribution to wildlife or fish conservation during the previous year or years.
Consideration includes research, administration, law enforcement, I&E, wildlife and fish management, teachers and students.
Byford retired as dean of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and professor of wildlife biol-ogy at the University of Tennessee at Martin in December 2009.
He has touched many lives through teaching and mentoring as an administrator and as a leader in the community and throughout the Natural Resources professions.
From his pioneering of 4-H wildlife programs to his direct involvement with “Hunters for the Hungry” in Tennessee, to his mediation of diverse representatives in agriculture and natural re-sources, he has shared his love of nature and wildlife to teach not only students, but entire communities about how to get “Back To The Land.”
Since retiring, he continues to be very active in a wide-range of civic and community activities.
TWRA Executive Director Ed Carter made the introduction of Byford and made the presentation of his award at the banquet.
