|Tickets are still available for the inaugural Main Street Union City Historic Christmas Church Tour. |
The event will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday and includes tours of First United Methodist, First Baptist, First Christian and Cumberland Presbyterian, all in Union City. The churches will be decorated for the Christmas season and members of each congregation will be on hand to share information about their church’s history. Refreshments will be served and ticketholders will be able to enjoy Christmas carols at each location as well.
Tickets are $10 each and are available at the Main Street office behind Suedell’s in downtown Union City and at Commercial Bank downtown and on East Reelfoot Avenue. They will also be available at each of the churches on the tour.
This year, the Historic Christmas Church Tour takes the place of the annual Tour of Homes hosted by Main Street.
Main Street executive director Phyllis Rauchle presented the idea for a church tour to her board of directors after returning from the National Main Street conference in Des Moines, where she took part in the “Alter Crawl” that featured downtown Des Moines churches and cathedrals.
Since it is the inaugural year, Main Street focused on churches within the Main Street District in Union City. Plans are already being made for a 2012 Christmas edition. Congregations who would like to open their churches for next year’s tour are encouraged to call Mrs. Rauchle at 885-8330 to discuss the possibility.
This year’s tour allows about 30 minutes at each church, with 15 minutes for travel between sites.
The tour is self-guided. Published in The Messenger 12.8.11
