The championship round of the Weakley County Basketball Tournament is now set after Monday night’s second-round action that saw three teams advance to the final round.
The Dresden boys had a tough time against Sharon in the opening game of the second round, squeaking out 33-30 win in a back-and-forth game over Sharon.
The Greenfield girls then had to fight off top-seeded Dresden throughout the entire game before finally opening up a gap late in the fourth period for a 34-27 win in the second game.
In the nightcap, the Martin boys had no trouble with Gleason, easily winning by a score of 55-19.
Thursday night’s championship games will pit No. 3 seeded Martin against No. 4 seeded Greenfield in the girls’ game at 6 p.m. and top seed Martin against second seed Dresden in the boys’ at 8 p.m.
Dresden 33, Sharon 30 (B)
The Eagles (4-5) gave the Lions (7-2) all they could handle and then some in their second round game.
Dresser Winn provided the offense for Dresden with his game-high 18 points, but it was Dylan Yates who scored the game-winning basket for the Lions after he converted a three-point play at the foul line with just under 1:30 to play in the game.
Yates was fouled by Alex Warren and converted the old fashioned three-point play for a 31-30 advantage. Winn and Yates then hit a free throw each to put Dresden up by three.
A tight defense by the Lions prevented the Eagles from getting a good look at the basket, and Warren put up a desperation 3-point shot as the buzzer sounded.
Chance Plunk led the Eagles with 12 points followed by Edgar Olivas, and Joseph Williams with nine points each.
G’field 34, Dresden 27 (G)
The Lady Lions (7-2) were not as fortunate as the boys in their game against the Lady Yellowjackets (5-5). The Lady Yellowjackets’ game-winning basket also came from the free throw line with just over two minutes to play.
Dresden’s Alex Sledd tied the game at 27-all with a short jump shot, but then Savanna Hodges scored at the line for Greenfield.
Melissa Williams put Greenfield up by three points on a shot under the rim with 1:32 to go.
The Lady Yellowjackets then put the game out of reach at the foul line with free throws by Morgan Simmons, Kyndal Wiley and Williams.
The Lady Loins never led in the game, and Greenfield’s biggest lead came in the second period with a score of 14-8.
Williams led all scorers with 14 points followed by Wiley with 12. Jacqueline Ellis and Kasey Gallimore each had six points to lead the Lady Lions.
Martin 55, Gleason 19 (B)
The Panthers put away the Bulldogs in the first period Tuesday night.
Martin used a pressure defense to pound the Bulldogs into early submission, holding Gleason scoreless throughout the first period until 30 seconds to play.
By that time, however, Martin was up 26-2.
Gleason managed to get some offense going when Martin head coach Andy Sliger put his reserves into the game in the second period. Gleason put 13 points on the scoreboard in the second period.
Martin held Gleason to four points after halftime.
Martin was led by Justin Johnson and his game high 14 points. Garrett Sams added 12 and Parker Beal scored 10. Gleason was led by Tracy Perry with 12 points.
