The Animal Adoption Center will be closing.
The Messenger received notification this morning by email that the group running the shelter has given Union City its 45-day notice, as allowed by its contract, to close the shelter.
The last day of operation will be Jan. 19, 2012.
“All our animals are still available for adoption and all adoption fees will be waived with the adopters agreement to spay/neuter,” Animal Adoption Center board member Michelle Ursery said in the email.
She told The Messenger, “It’s been a hard decision.”
Shelter manager Sarah Dodd said they haven’t been able to get enough volunteers or donations to continuing running the  shelter.
She said most of the dogs have been taken to other rescue facilities, but she will still have about 10 at the end of the week and she still has lots of cats, as she has not been able to find other rescue shelters to take them. Plus, the shelter must continue accepting animals which are being picked up by the cities.
The shelter will need food donations to help get them through to closing day, as well as cleaning supplies and help moving.
Union City city manager Kathy Dillon said she has received an email about the 45-day notice. She said she will contact the council members and they will begin exploring their options. Published in The Messenger 12.7.11
