Production for Vaughn, UC goes way up after halftime
The Union City Middle School girls — and more specifically Tykesha Vaughn — saved their best for last Monday night against Humboldt.
Vaughn had a monster second half and two overtimes to lead the Lady Tornadoes to a 44-41 double-overtime triumph in West Tennessee Athletic Conference play.
The UCMS boys came out on the short end of a 42-37 score vs. the Vikings.
In other games involving local teams Monday reported to The Messenger, Lake Road swept Black Oak, 35-9 in the girls’ game and 49-22 on the boys’ side, while Ridgemont did the same to Gibson County, 43-14 and 47-25.
The South Fulton-Hickman County game was canceled due to weather issues.

UC girls win thriller
Vaughn finished with 21 points, four rebounds and six steals after having just two, one and two, respectively, in those statistical categories in the first half.
Chynia Hyde contributed to the heroics with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Caroline Chism collected nine rebounds.
The Lady Twisters improved to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in league play
The Golden Tornadoes played from behind all night and never could catch up to the Vikings.
Union City trailed 12-7 after one period and 22-17 at the half. Humboldt’s lead was 34-26 after three periods.
Willaevion Burton scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to pace the Twisters, while Quentrail Polk had seven points and both Taj Reid and Joe Wiggins had six points.
UC falls to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Tornado teams host Lake County on Thursday night.
LR gets BO twice
The Lady Generals are still without a loss through nine games after completing a season sweep of Black Oak.
Avery Partin scored nine points for the winners, while teammates Parker Albright and Anna Logan tallied seven apiece.
An 18-0 run in the third quarter salted the game away.
Black Oak fell to 1-8.
In boys’ play, Lake Road improved to 6-3 as Brennan Whaley had 16 points and five assists and Seth Clouse had 15 markers, five rebounds and four steals. Brett Jackson gave the Generals three players in double figures scoring-wise with 11 points and also had a game-high nine boards.
Drake McGuire led BO with nine points, while Hayden Davis put in five.
LR led at ever turn, 15-5 after one, 23-9 at the half and 36-20 with three periods in the book.
Lake Road hosts South Fulton Thursday, while Black Oak is at home to play Ridgemont.
R’mont rolls
The Mustang girls exploded to a 17-0 start, while the boys had a similar run in the second period to record lopsided wins over GC.
Samantha Davis had 13 points and Landry Webster 10 for the Ridgemont girls, who improved to 5-7. Bailey Daniel contributed to the winning cause with seven points, six boards and two steals.
R’mont was comfortably ahead 26-6 at the intermission and 39-10 after three quarters.
The nightcap saw the Mustangs use a run of 17 unanswered points to stretch a 14-8 first-period lead to 31-8 at the half.
Cameron Flowers had 12 points and Nathan King 11 for Ridgemont (7-5). J.P. Jones scored seven.
