Martin store caught selling ‘Happy’ drug

A Martin convenience store was caught selling plant food containing the drug methcathinone following a lengthy investigation by Martin and Union City police, the 27th Judicial District Drug Task Force and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The investigation began after Martin police received information Aug. 24 that someone had allegedly purchased some Happy plant food from Smoke and Suds convenience store at 165 University Plaza in Martin, according to an affidavit released by investigator Mark Rushing of the Martin Police Department.
Later, in an undercover police operation, a Union City Police Department investigator entered Smoke and Suds and allegedly purchased three packs of the plant food for $30 — with recorded serial number bills — from store employee Su Lin, 23, of Jackson.
Martin police then entered the store with the purchase, spoke with Ms. Lin and seized 24 packs of plant food that were allegedly kept under the counter. Police also reported they recovered the bills with the same serial numbers as those allegedly used to make the purchase.
The plant food was packaged and sent to the TBI’s crime lab for analysis. In late October, the results came back positive for methylenedioxymethcathinone.
Methcathinone is a stimulant that is a structural analogue of methamphetamine and cathinone, sometimes used as a recreational drug and considered addictive, according to drug guides. It is clandestinely manufactured from readily available chemicals and is currently a DEA Schedule I controlled substance in the United States.
Ms. Lin was issued a criminal summons and appeared Nov. 23 in Weakley County General Sessions Court on a misdemeanor offense. Jail time was all suspended upon payment of fines and costs and compliance with terms and conditions of probation. She was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days unsupervised probation, with alcohol and drug evaluation and recommended treatment, and fined $250.
