ISU’s Shannon feasts on Skyhawks … again

UT Martin women’s basketball head coach Kevin McMillan didn’t have to say anything about Indiana State senior Shannon Thomas’ effort Wednesday night at the Hulman Center.
Thomas led the host Sycamores to a 66-55 victory over the Skyhawks, scoring 22 points and pulling down 17 rebounds.
“Shannon Thomas loves UT Martin,” McMillan said.
In three games against UT Martin, Thomas has two double-doubles — last year’s 28 points and 21 rebounds at Martin in addition to Wednesday’s effort — 56 total points and 44 total rebounds.
“If we had a post player like Thomas, we would probably be 30 points better than we are,” McMillan said. “We shot 40 percent from 3-point range and our guards (Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome) were able to do that on their own. Imagine what they could do if they had a post presence to help them.”
Butler scored 18 points against Indiana State. She shot 50 percent from 3-point range (4-for-8) and 7-of-9 from the field. Newsome, the two-time OVC Player of the Week, scored 16 points in the game. She hit three 3-pointers and was 5-of-18 from the field.
With the loss, the Skyhawks will wrap up their five-game road trip 2 p.m. Sunday against Memphis in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
