KIWANIS CLUB HOSTS DOG DAY – Martin Kiwanis Club member Allen Page watches as Martin Police officer Marty McClure and his explosives sniffing dog, Fido, demonstrate  the dog’s ability to find gun shells and other materials that contain explosives or explosive residue.  The talents of Fido and his partner help disarm potentially dangerous situations and allow the officer to testify in court cases.  Fido and McClure were part in the WLJT – Martin Kiwanis Club Dog Day where local pet rescue centers, veterinarians, pet kennels and pet owners came out to celebrate pets and to encourage others to open their homes and hearts to animals waiting in shelters for their “forever” families.  The day was based on the Martha Speaks Shelter Dog Campaign that encourages adoption of shelter pets.  The day’s activities included best dressed pet, cutest pet, best pipe-cleaner pet created by children at the event and a pet-owner look-alike contest plus many hands-on activities for youngsters. Donations of pet food were collected for the shelters and adoptable pets were the center of attention.  Dog day promises to become an annual event that will be held in the fall of each year.  For information about WLJT and/or the Martin Kiwanis Club visit their respective websites at www.wljt.org or www.martinkiwanisclub.org.
