The UT Martin women’s basketball team will be looking for its third road win in four tries Wednesday night when it plays host Indiana State in the Hulman Center.
Tipoff is set for 6:05 p.m.
Indiana State and UT Martin have plenty in common this season. For starters, both teams have played future OVC member Belmont. The Skyhawks own a 67-48 victory over the Bruins, while the Sycamores suffered a 69-59 setback at Belmont’s Curb Center in Nashville.
Both Indiana State and UT Martin have also played other teams from Indiana. The Sycamores played Notre Dame and IUPUI, while the Skyhawks played Purdue at Mackey Arena. Both Notre Dame and Purdue are nationally ranked, and both Indiana State and UT Martin have losses to the perennial powers.
Forget about the common foes and the nationally ranked teams, Indiana State and UT Martin played twice a year ago, once in the Hulman Center and once in the Elam Center. The home team won in each instance.
Both teams like to shoot the 3-pointer. Indiana State’s Britany Schoen is among the school’s best long-range shooters. UT Martin’s Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome, along with senior Taylor Hall like to shoot from the arc. Indiana State is shooting just 29 percent from 3-point range. Schoen has made 13-of-38 treys for 34 percent.
The Skyhawks are shooting 33 percent from 3-point range. Sophomore guard Jaclissa Haislip is leading the team from the arc. She has made 10-of-22 for 47 percent. Butler is shooting 31 percent, while Newsome is firing the long-ball at 38 percent. Hall has made 10-of-34 for 29 percent.
The game could come down to who wins the battle on the boards. UT Martin is averaging 43.2 boards per game, while Indiana State is averaging 33.2 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Beth Hawn led the Skyhawks in rebounding the last time out, at Saint Louis, with career-best 13 rebounds. Published in The WCP 11.29.11
