A driver who unsuccessfully tried to throw a lit cigarette out the window of his truck lost control of his vehicle and struck pumps at a gas station on Thanksgiving Day.
According to a report at the Union City Police Department, Mark Welton Tibbs of 8787 Tibbs Lane in South Fulton was traveling on West Main Street in Union City Thursday afternoon when he attempted to extinguish a cigarette out the driver’s side window. It blew back inside and landed somewhere around his steering wheel, he said.
Tibbs told police he thought he could smell smoke and was afraid his truck was catching fire, so he began to frantically search for the burning cigarette.
Once he took his eyes off the roadway, the vehicle drifted off to the left side of the road and into the parking lot of a BP gas station at 302 West Main St. where it struck the gas pumps.
There was significant damage to the vehicle and the pumps, according to the report.
Tibbs was cited for failure to drive on the right side of the roadway.
