The Thanksgiving holiday is over and now it’s time to look forward to Christmas.
Although winter is still officially more than 20 days away, some Tennesseans may have thought differently when they stepped outside today.
A slow-moving cold front is bringing a variety of weather cautions to Tennessee, including the possibility of measurable snow.
The National Weather Service has posted a winter storm watch for counties along the Mississippi and Alabama borders, from just east of Memphis into southern Middle Tennessee. Forecasters say up to four inches of snow could fall between this evening and Tuesday morning, the heaviest after midnight.
A winter weather advisory for one to three inches of snow is in place for much of the rest of West Tennessee.
Obion County is expected to see temperatures near 40 today, but the National Weather Service was still calling for a chance of rain, possibly mixed with snow before 9 this morning, with little to no snow accumulation. Snow, possibly mixed with rain, is forecast for tonight, with less than a half inch of accumulation. The area is expected to have a low near 36 tonight.
The National Weather Service is continuing its forecast of mixed rain and snow for the area on Tuesday, with sleet expected before noon, then a chance of rain. Tuesday’s high is to be near 40, while the low is expected around 29.
Rain is expected for the remainder of Tennessee today. A flash flood watch extends from just east of Nashville across the northern plateau. A flash flood warning is in effect for parts of the southern plateau and the Chattanooga area.
A flood watch is posted for the Tennessee Valley, including Knoxville.
Temperatures in Obion County will improve slightly as the week progresses. Forecasts call for it to be sunny with a high near 44 and a low around 26 on Wednesday.
It is expected to be sunny and dry with a high near 53 on Thursday, with a low around 30. Friday’s high is forecast at 49, with a low near 30. Precipitation is expected to return on Saturday, with a 30 percent chance of showers. The high is expected to be near 46, while the low is forecast for 32. Published in The Messenger 11.28.11
