UT Martin volleyball falls short of NCAAs

The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team saw its stellar season come to a halt Saturday night in the championship game of the Ohio Valley Conference when No. 1 seed and tournament host Morehead State claimed a 3-0 victory.
UTM dropped game one, 15-25, game two 23-25 and stretched game three before bowing out 24-26.
The Skyhawks, picked 10th in the preseason poll, finished the season with a 19-14 overall record and a 12-8 OVC worksheet.
UT Martin managed just seven kills in the first game with 21 attacks and six errors. The team hit .092. The second game featured twice as many attacks, but the Skyhawks managed just six kills while committing seven errors. In game three, the Skyhawks hit .250 and piled up 12 kills.
Freshman Emily Keaton led the Skyhawks with 10 kills and a .450 hitting percentage.
Senior Jenna Miller had 17 assists in the match, while junior Kasey Elswick had 14 digs.
Britany Wilburn had one solo block and three block assists as the Skyhawks recorded six total team blocks.
Morehead State was led by Ellie Roberson with 14 kills and Aryn Bohannon with 13 kills. Leslie Schellhaas had 19 digs and Lindsey Roth recorded 19 digs. Caitlin Clark had 37 assists.
The Skyhawks will lose four players — Jenna Miller, Ashley Doherty, Britany Wilburn and Peyton Colclough — from this year’s team to graduation.
Miller and Doherty were named to the OVC All-Tournament team.
UTM 3, TSU 1
UT Martin defeated No. 2 Tennessee State (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18) to advance to the finals of the OVC volleyball championships.
This marks the Skyhawks first trip to the championship match since 2002, when they defeated Southeast Missouri.
Doherty led the Skyhawks with 15 kills while Kelly Hogan chipped in 12. Miller dished out a match-best 39 while Wilburn registered 10 blocks in the victory. Elswick paced the Skyhawks with 13 digs while Emily Keaton added 12 and Meryl Loop had 11.
The Tigers were led by Rachel Ambroch with 12 kills as Shaquita Miller and Terakka Walker each had 10. Walker added 14 digs for the double-double. Erika Moss also registered a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. Britany Hathorn led all players with 16 digs in the match.
UTM 3, JSU 2
UT Martin came from two sets down to defeat No. 6 Jacksonville State (23-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-20, 15-12).
It marks the first tournament win for the Skyhawks since 2001.
UT Martin had three players reach double-digits in kills, led by Ashley Doherty with 19. Allie Whimpey had 18 kills, while Britany Wilburn had 10.
Miller dished out a match-high 51 assists to go with 17 digs. Elswick led the Skyhawk defense as she tallied 31 digs.
Jacksonville State was led by Liza Senenkova with 19 kills, while Stephanie Koontz added 18.
