Ridgemont squads
drop pair to Falcons

Ridgemont came up short in two middle school basketball games vs. Lake County on Tuesday night, the girls dropping a 36-22 decision and the boys falling to the Falcons 60-34.
The Lady Mustangs fell to 3-6 with their setback, while the R’mont boys are now 4-5.
Samantha Davis had seven points and Landry Webster six for Ridgemont in the opener. Klayton Hagan scored 12 and J.P. Jones seven for the Mustang boys.
Ridgemont goes to Gib-son County on Monday.

Newsome selected
for OVC award

Sophomore guard Jasmine Newsome has been named the women’s basketball adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced earlier today.
Newsome led UT Martin to an 88-69 victory over host Southern Miss. She scored a career-high 39 points in the game and was one point shy from tying the school record for the most points in a single game.
Newsome also set a new record for the most three-pointers made in a game with nine treys. For the week she averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. She shot 44.1 percent from the floor and went 9-for-18 from behind the arc.
This is the fourth time Newsome has been recognized by the OVC as the Player of the Week.
Newsome was also recognized as the OVC’s Freshman of the Week four times a year ago.

inks lefty pitcher

UT Martin head baseball coach Bubba Cates has announced the signing of Chris Flores out of Chaminade-Madonna College Prep in Hollywood, Fla.
A 6-4, 170-pound left-handed pitcher, Flores was the staff ace for the Lions as a junior in 2011. He posted a 7-6 record with a 2.23 ERA in 74 innings, fanning 71 batters against only 22 walks.
In 13 starts, he tossed eight complete games and earned all-district first team accolades. He also was named a first-teamer by 954 Broward baseball magazine.
