Fortnightly Club holds meeting Posted: Wednesday, November 23, 2011 2:46 pm The Fortnightly Club meeting was held in the lovely home of Carolyn Gresham Nov. 5 with Linda Slack and Martha Lee Lacy serving as co-hostesses. The guests were served a delicious apple cake while visiting before the meeting. President Mollie Gallien called the meeting to order and held a short business meeting. Donna Jones introduced the guest speaker, Morgan Stone, nurse practitioner, who spoke on the importance of staying physically active no matter what age. Stone discussed how much physical activity healthy adults and older adults need for health benefits. She stated that bodies are made to move and be active. Two kinds of exercise were mentioned aerobic and anaerobic. These exercises need to be mixed and matched to remain healthy. Aerobic is considered more cardiac and anaerobic is more about balancing strength and flexibility. Stone explained by remaining active, the risk of heart disease decreases, cholestero is lowered, osteoporosis can be prevented, and blood pressured can be lowered, just to name a few of the benefits. Also, a person needs to do what is fun for him or her, whether that is walking, water aerobics, bicycling, gardening or dancing. Sone stated a mixture of activities would benefit the body as well as relieve tension. The program was informative and a reminder to all members to “Stay Active.” Members present in addition to the ones mentioned above were Carolyn Brown, Lynn Gibson, Edna Harris, Carolyn James, Dottie Smith, Nelle Sparks, Barbara Trentham, Sandra Vincent, Linda Wade and Melba Wash.
