WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Sophomore guard Heather Butler poured in nearly half of UT Martin’s points at nationally-ranked Purdue on Sunday, but the Skyhawks fell 65-39 to the No. 16 Boilermakers in women’s basketball action at Mackey Arena.
Butler was the only player to crack double-figures for UT Martin (3-1) with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.
Jasmine Newsome led the team with seven rebounds for the Skyhawks, who trailed by just a dozen points (27-15) at the half.
Purdue (3-0) was led by Sam Ostarello’s 13 points, while Courtney Moses and Brittany Rayburn scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Purdue shot just 39.1 percent from the floor, but the Skyhawks couldn’t take advantage, shooting 27.8 percent for the game.
Trailing 5-0, Butler got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard with a jumper at the 17:48 mark.
Two possessions later, a bucket by Shelby Crawford got UT Martin within one point at 5-4 with 17 minutes to go in the first half.
The Boilermakers then went on an 11-0 run before a Butler trey at the 10:27 mark made the score 16-7.
The Skyhawks quickly settled in and got back in the game by allowing only one Purdue field goal over the last 5:38 of the first half.
UT Martin sliced its deficit to eight points at the 6:30 mark on a three-pointer by Jaclissa Haislip. After six Boilermaker free throws, a Beth Hawn jumper with 3:06 to go in the half got the Skyhawks within 10 points.
Purdue would add one more basket to enter the locker room with a 27-15 advantage.
Butler’s eight points led all scorers at the half.
Butler scored 11 of the UT Martin’s first 14 points in the second half — including eight straight in a stretch of 2:17.
