Barnes completes basic training

Pvt. 2nd Class Kelsey N. Barnes of the Crystal community recently graduated from United States Army National Guard basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
She was among five of 187 graduates who maxed the physical training (PT) test. Miss Barnes received a Battalion Coin and a Physical Fitness Coin and was given a badge by her drill sergeant for outstanding achievement.
Miss Barnes also recently graduated from Advanced Individual Training as an Engineer 12N Heavy Equipment Operator. She received the “Steel Soldier” award for highest PT score in her platoon and a Battalion Coin.
She is the daughter of Kenneth and Sharon Barnes of the Crystal community and the granddaughhter of Sue Barnes and the late Robert M. Barnes of the Crystal community, Cora Gill of Union City and the late Richard Parks of Grenada, Miss.
The 2011 Obion County Central High School graduate is now attached with the 913th Engineer Co. of the Tennessee Army National Guard in Union City.
She plans to attend Mississippi State University in the spring of 2012 and join the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in hopes of becoming an officer. Published in The Messenger 11.23.11
