Gerald Elmer McElvain, 80, of Martin died Nov. 20, 2011, at his home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Garrett Sweaney officiating. Burial will follow in Montrose Cemetery in Greenville, Ill.
The family will receive friends 5-7 this evening at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorials be made to The Gideons or the Nazarene Church in Fulton.
He was born Sept. 13, 1931, in Mansfield, Ohio, son of the late Edgar Elbert and Pluma (Stoner) McElvain. He was married to the former Carol Marie Zimmerman, who died July 17, 1981. He then married the former Ruth David, who died Nov. 20, 2009.
He had been a minister and a professor of sociology at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He was a member of Fulton’s Nazarene Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Jan Baskette of Old Hickory; three sons, David McElvain of Albuquerque, N.M., Phillip McElvain of Martin and Remo Torres of Knoxville; his sister, LaDonna Barrett of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; two granddaughters, Skye McElvain of Bowling Green, Ky., and Kaley McElvain of Louisville, Ky.; his grandson, Justin Abney of Old Hickory; two great-granddaughters, Manney Creek and Riley Creek, both of Old Hickory; a step-granddaughter, Hayley Torres of Knoxville; and a step-grandson, Benjamin Torres of Knoxville.
