|JONESBORO, Ark. — UT Martin led for most of the first half at Arkansas State, but the Red Wolves pulled away late in the second half to claim a 63-45 win in men’s basketball Thursday night. |
Mike Liabo led UTM with 10 points, also adding five rebounds and four assists. In the post, Corderio Maclin scored eight points in 18 minutes off the bench and Myles Taylor (eight points) led the team in rebounding for the third straight game with eight boards. Omari Minor tallied five points, four assists and three steals off the bench for UT Martin.
Trey Finn accumulated 21 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for Arkansas State, who shot 59.3 percent from the floor (16-for-27) in the last 20 minutes. Marcus Hooten also cracked double-figures in the scoring column with 13 points for the Red Wolves.
“We were playing at our pace in the first half,” UT Martin head coach Jason James said. “We were executing, making them guard and we were very patient offensively, sharing the ball and getting layups. We didn’t shoot a great percentage but we were playing the way we needed to play to win. Arkansas State made a lot of shots in the second half and the lead ballooned a little bit for them. We weren’t ready to make shots tonight and it definitely showed.”
After three straight road games to begin the season, the Skyhawks will be at home Saturday. UT Martin will host Rochester College at 6 p.m. Published in The Messenger 11.18.11
