SF ahead all the way vs. Cougars; Twister boys rally past Northview
South Fulton stayed ahead of Hillcrest pretty much all night.
The Union City boys took over in the third quarter for a come-from-behind win over Northview.
SF took a pair of games from Hillcrest at the Devils’ gymnasium with a 37-24 triumph in the girls’ game and a 52-33 verdict in the boys’ nightcap.
The UC boys popped for 23 points in the third period to knock off Northview 46-37, giving the junior Tornadoes a split for the night as Union City dropped a 38-29 decision in girls’ action.
The following is a roundup of Thursday night’s local junior high games reported to The Messenger.
SF takes pair
The Red Devil teams swept visiting Hillcrest on Thursday.
SF’s girls kept a steady lead over the Lady Cougars throughout the game, taking a 6-3 advantage after one quarter and then leading 19-11 at the half and 27-20 at the end of three periods.
Taylor Rogers and Aalia Bivens each had 13 points for the Devilettes, Rogers also grabbing 10 rebounds and Bivens getting four steals.
Cassidy Ruddle also pulled down 10 rebounds, and Tiffany Potts had five steals for SF, which improves to 8-1.
Courtney Heuck had 16 points for Hillcrest (1-4).
The Red Devil boys grabbed the early lead and then pulled away in the second and third quarters. SF led 13-6 at the end of the first and stretched its advantage to 29-13 at the half and 42-20 after three periods.
Zaccius Mays posted a double-double for South Fulton (5-4) with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Jyriq Jones scored nine points,  pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists and grabbed four steals.
Rhett Thomas Fussell tied for game-high scoring honors with 18 for the Cougars (1-4).
Hillcrest plays at Lake County on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. and then hosts Lake Road on Monday. SF will also be at home on Monday, playing Hickman County.
UCMS teams split
The Tornado boys used a 23-9 third quarter to rally from a five-point halftime deficit and square their West Tennessee Athletic Conference mark at 1-1 with the triumph over Northview.
UC is now 4-1 overall.
Quentrail Polk scored 10 points and both Willaevion Burton and Joe Wiggins added nine each for the Tornadoes against Northview.
In the girls game, UC fought its way back into contention after being down 16 points.
Chynia Hude had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the locals, while Caroline Chism had eight rebounds and Tykesha Vaughn came up with six steals. Piper Warren had eight points and five steals for Union City, which fell to 1-4.
UC won a B-boys game, 39-38. Jack Murrell scored 11 points and Sam Guess nine.
