Mrs. Lowell Fields opened her beautiful home to the Martin Fine Arts Club on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
Hostesses assisting Mrs. Fields were Mrs. Morris Liming and Mrs. Fred Vowell.
The 19 members and guest speaker enjoyed a delicious spice cake with lemon sauce, baked pecans, and coffee served by the hostesses.
Mrs. Michael Hinds introduced the speaker, Mrs. Marlow Peters, who gave an interesting book review on “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.
Mrs. Peters, having grown up in Montgomery, Ala., had a particular affinity for the book. She and others present expressed the interest with which they read the book as it mirrored the times of this area in the1950s and 1960s.
Mrs. Peters gave some background notes on the author, whose manuscript for this book was rejected 60 times before it was finally accepted and published. There was much discussion and her review of the unforgettable main characters in “The Help” made members want to reread the book.
After the program, the club president, Mrs. Tom Gallien, called the meeting to order and the collect was read. The secretary, Mrs. Michael Hinds, called the roll and read the minutes. Mrs. John Wall, treasurer, gave a financial report and reported the club’s donation of money to the Weldon Public Library.
Those present and not already mentioned were Mrs. James Cannon, Mrs. Bob Cheeseman, Mrs. Donnie Davis, Mrs. Tom Farmer, Mrs. Jerry Gresham, Mrs. G.T. Hall, Mrs. Bob Peeler, Mrs. E. B. Pritchett Jr., Mrs. George Pritchett, Mrs. James Pritchett, Mrs. James Shore, Mrs. Sanford Truitt, and Mrs. Phil Wade.
