Local artists encouraged to apply for arts festival

The Lower Town Arts & Music Festival is one of the biggest small art shows being staged today.
Completely run by area artists and a core of volunteers, the goal is to create an outstanding experience for both artists and the public alike.
“We believe in community involvement and that bigger isn’t necessarily better. Our intention is to weave the festival into the arts district itself to showcase local galleries as well as juried artists,” a spokesman said.
“To that end, we ensure that artists selected are of the highest quality and that they receive the best of care. We also strategically position artists in pairs throughout the festival so that there is ample breathing room between tents to allow for contemplation by visitors and avoid sensory overload brought on by too many artists crowded together throughout the festival boundaries. We want the public to stroll and explore, finding new creative standouts in each area of the festival.”
Even though the show is small, there has been an attendance of 13,000-15,000 for the past two years running.
The show’s emphasis is on regional artists and exclusively handmade.
To apply to be in the show, go to www.zapplication.org. Registration to Zapplication is free. Deadline for applications is Jan. 31, 2012.
