Players of the week – Defense | | Posted: Wednesday, November 16, 2011 7:02 pm
| Keontre Murrell School: Union City Grade: Junior Height: 5-7 Weight: 158 Pos.: Cornerback By the numbers: Continuing Union City’s momentum-swinging big plays, Murrell certainly had his share on the defensive end. In addition to three tackles, he recovered a fumble at the end of a Falcon kickoff return, and he took an interception 32 yards the other way for a touchdown 22 seconds into the fourth quarter. Murrell’s pick-six was the knockout blow in Union City’s comeback, giving the Golden Tornadoes the lead for good. Sound bite: “Keontre did a great job all night, and he really did good at locking down Rafeal (Tyler),” Bowling said. “That was his job. He gets better and better each week. His pick-six was another big momentum swing for us. Everyone has seen these guys grow up all season, and now we’re able to be opportunistic on defense. Keontre has been a big part of that, and that has helped our whole defense.” HONORABLE MENTION: Khiry Lewis, UC junior back, had seven tackles and an interception; Jamie Pirtle, UC freshman lineman, had seven tackles; Brett Gore, UC junior linebacker had seven tackles, including a sack; Tymaine Strickland, UC sophomore linebacker, had a team-high eight stops and also forced a fumble. (There was no tackle chart from the Obion Central-Covington game made available to The Messenger, despite several attempts to contact members of the coaching staff.)
