Eli Jordan is his parents’ one and only.
But it will be two times the fun “ones” his birthday rolls around Friday.
The number will figure prominently into the celebration when Eli celebrates his 11th birthday — on 11/11/11.
Ironically, Eli’s parents, local optometrist Dr. Rob Jordan and wife Stacy (Colotta) Jordan, had even been married for 11 years when Eli was born 11 years ago on 11/11.
“He’s our first and only,” Mrs. Jordan said of her son.
Eli was delivered on Nov. 11, 2000, at 6:11 p.m. by Dr. Robert Cameron at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City and weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces. Mrs. Jordan recalled she and her husband were watching the Ole Miss-Louisiana State University football game while waiting for their son to be born.
“We were pulling for Ole Miss,” said Mrs. Jordan, who is from Mississippi. “Eli Manning was play-ing.”
The Jordans’ son Eli is actually named after Mrs. Jordan’s brother Eli, rather than now-NFL quarterback Eli Manning, but she said her husband may tell a different version.
“If you ask Rob, he says it’s Eli Manning,” she said with a laugh.
Eli Jordan — now a fifth-grader at Union City Elementary School — will be celebrating his 11th birthday in style Friday with an 11/11 party that will begin at 6:11 p.m. and end at 11 p.m.
The number 11 will also likely be prominently displayed in the design of the birthday cake, according to his mother.
Family and friends have already been making reference to the special day as it fast approaches, with family friend Andy Gibson giving Eli a special Reelfoot Lake commemorative duck band stamped with serial number 1111.
After Friday’s “ones” in a lifetime celebration, Eli will have to wait another 100 years — until Nov. 11, 2111 — for the next 11/11/11.
