Francisco and Mara Villa have opened up a new grocery store on North First Street in Union City, with a definite Latin American flavor.
La Villa Market is open at 204 A North First St., next to Charlie T’s restaurant.
The market is open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tues-days, Wednesdays and Fridays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays.
The store opened Nov. 1 and is stocked with a variety of Mexican and Guatemalan products, as well as American grocery products.
Fresh tortillas will be available on Saturdays and the owners also have tamales, tostadas, shakes and smoothies available for customers.
The market also has tortas (Mexican sandwich bread) and a nice selection of Mexican soft drinks and snacks.
The grocery store also stocks a variety of phone calling cards for its Hispanic customers.
Villa is a native of Mexico and his wife is a native of Guatemala. They met in New York and have lived in Union City for the past 11 years. They pastor the Hispanic church Iglesia Pentecostal Juan 3:16 at 1002 North Clover St. in Union City.
Their business venture is truly a family affair as they operate La Villa Market with their two children. Jennifer Villa is a student at the University of Tennessee at Martin and Jacob Villa is a student at Union City Middle School.
“We are very excited to serve the community,” Mrs. Villa said.
The market is set up to accept credit cards and Electronic Budget Transfer (EBT) payments for purchases.
The telephone number for La Villa Market is 885-8729.
