The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will open its 2011-12 season with an exhibition against Christian Brothers University at 7 tonight in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
The Skyhawk women return all but one starter from last year’s team, which won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they played host Duke.
“We will try to get an idea of who will contribute this season,” UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. “We also want to fill any holes in our lineups.”
The Skyhawk women finished the season with a 21-11 overall record and a 14-4 OVC worksheet. The team returns starters Jaclissa Haislip, Jasmine Newsome, Taylor Hall and Heather Butler.
“We plan to treat this like a regular game and do the things we normally do,” McMillan said. “The difference will be a lot of players will get playing time.”
The Skyhawk women will officially open their season 7 p.m. Nov. 11, when Belmont invades the Elam Center.
The 2011-12 UTM women’s season includes home games against Air Force, Vanderbilt, Evansville and SIU-Carbondale and road dates with Southern Miss, Purdue, Memphis and Louisville.
The Ohio Valley Confer-ence portion of the schedule begins Dec. 31 against Tennessee Tch at home.
The Skyhawk men will also play a preseason exhibition. Tipoff for the Skyhawks vs. Webster is set for 11 a.m. Friday in the Elam Center. The men’s exhibition is part of the fourth annual “Character Counts” game.
About 1,800 students from local elementary, middle and high schools will attend the game as part of a field trip to reward good behavior.
It will be the first time the Skyhawks take the floor in 2011-12 as third-year head coach Jason James will prepare his team for its regular season opener at Louisville on Nov. 11.
The Cardinals are ranked No. 8 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and are regarded as one of the favorites in the Big East Conference.
UT Martin’s regular season home opener will be Nov. 19 against Rochester College.
UTM also has road games against Mississippi State, UAB, Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee.
The Skyhawks will be the OVC part of the 2011-12 schedule on Dec. 21 at Murray State.
UTM returns seven players and three starters from last season’s squad, which tripled the win output from the previous season and won the first OVC tournament game in Nashville in program history.
