Police say a recent incident involving a 95-year-old Union City woman and her payment of money for home repairs was not a scam as originally reported.
Myrtle Harton reported the incident Oct. 28 to the Union City Police Department, claiming a white man showed up at her residence saying he did some repairs to her roof and the bill was $375. She told a police officer she was confused about what the man, identified as Richard Chamberlain, was telling her and, because she was confused, wrote him a check for the amount requested.
There apparently was confusion over the incident and Chamberlain had planned to come back another day to do the job.
Union City police investigator Chris Cummings confirmed today that the incident has been “cleared up” and no charges of any kind were levied against Chamberlain. He said Ms. Harton’s money has also been returned to her.
