Union City’s Christmas parade will be returning to familiar territory this year.
The parade will once again line up at Reelfoot Shopping Center on South First Street and will travel north up First Street through downtown.
The familiar route is returning following a change which had the parade traveling the opposite direction down First Street in recent years, according to Union City Jaycees member Ron Parks, chairman of this year’s parade.
“We’re going back to the way it was done before,” he told The Messenger.
The Union City parade is set for Dec. 1, with lineup to be from 6:30-7 p.m. at the shopping center and the parade to begin about 7-7:15 p.m., immediately following Main Street-Union City’s annual tree-lighting ceremony downtown.
Parks said all county municipalities, including police and fire departments, are encouraged to participate. Local school bands are also invited and floats are welcomed. Pre-registration is not required, but organizers would prefer participants register in advance so they have an idea what to expect.
Parade participants may register now by calling Parks at First Choice Farm and Lawn at 885-1315.
“We’d like to know what’s coming,” he said.
Parks said a total of $1,000 in prize money, recently approved by Union City’s city council, will be available for the winning floats and entries this year.
He said he would encourage local residents to enjoy the community Christmas tree lighting ceremony earlier in the evening Dec. 1 and then “hang out downtown and wait on the parade.”
