It is designed to be a day of thanksgiving for those who make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure everyone’s freedoms will not be compromised.
At least, that is the common goal for the veterans parade organized by Rolling Thunder® TN-Chapter 6.
Since the project’s undertaking four years ago, bringing the community together for thanksgiving and tribute for local veterans, servicemen and those whose memory lives on through friends and family members have remained the goals for the annual Veterans Parade celebration.
This year hopes to be bigger and better than years’ past with the level of community participation.
The event will always pay homage to veterans, and community members are asked to join Rolling Thunder® TN-Chapter 6 Saturday in Martin when the group will form a parade line dedicated to area veterans.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. that day. Line-up is at 9 a.m. in the Hardy Graham Stadium parking lot on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Local veterans will serve as the grand marshals of the parade and will be offered transportation for the parade route, which will travel down University Street toward South Lindell Street.
There is no entry fee to participate in the parade.
Churches, organizations businesses and, of course, veterans are encouraged to join the parade line-up.
Immediately following the parade, community members are invited to gather in Festival Park on the corner of Main and South Lindell streets in downtown Martin for fellowship.
A banner will be hung in the park listing all of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Roberto Mancusi and a UT Martin music student will provide entertainment.
Local Boy and Cub Scouts will collect tattered and torn American flags for proper disposal. The community is asked to bring tattered flags to Festival Park that day.
Rolling Thunder® TN-Chapter 6 members are also selling tickets for a Visa card giveaway. The drawing will be held following the parade in Festival Park. Tickets are still on sale and can be purchased from any RT-Chapter 6 member.
The cost is $10 for three tickets.
The grand prize is a $1,000 Visa card. Second prize is a $500 card and third prize is a $300 card.
Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Humboldt Veterans Home and community service projects for local veterans.
Vicki’s Designer Touch, a gift shop located on Lindell Street in downtown Martin, will collect toys for the annual “Toys for Tots” program, which benefits military families. Donations of toys can be dropped off at Vicki’s that day or any day leading up to the Veterans Parade event.
After the festivities in Festival Park that day, all veterans are invited to the American Legion Post #55 for a meal courtesy of Rolling Thunder® TN-Chapter 6 and the S.A.L.S.
To register for the parade, visit Movies to Go in University Plaza for an entry form or call parade organizer Pat Laird at 587-9742 (day), or 364-5766 (evening) for more information. Published in The Messenger 11.2.11
