Donald Ray Sherrill
Sherrill, Donald Ray (Don), age 69, passed away at his home in Knoxville, early Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, following a long and brave battle with brain cancer.
Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a 1960 graduate of City High School, Chattanooga and received his BA in Business Management and Economics from Chapman University in Orange, California. Don served in the USAF 1960-1965. He served as, President of Dukedom Bank in Dukedom, President of Bartlett Bank, Bartlett, and Chairman of Citizens Bank of Waverly. Don was a retired Bank Examiner having retired in 2004 from the FDIC and was later self-employed as a banking consultant doing loan review for several East Tennessee and North Georgia banks.
He was a man of many interests and diverse hobbies. He raised registered black Angus cattle in early 1970s, raced jet boats and was Competition Jet SDBA points champion in 1977. He loved to hunt and fish and in the last few years spent his fishing time chasing stripers at Cherokee Lake. Don loved old cars, corvettes in particular, and restored three himself and enjoyed exhibiting them in various shows from Maine to Florida. He professed his faith at a young age and was a member of the Concord United Methodist Church. He served on numerous boards and committees over the years in various churches. He was preceded in death by his parents, Truman H. and Ellen Floyd Sherrill; sister, Barbara Ann Sherrill Mason McPherson; and paternal grandparents, Frank and Martha Ladd Sherrill; maternal grandparents, R. Tunnel and Rose Norris Floyd.
Don is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ranatta L. Sherrill of Knoxville; son, Donald R. Sherrill, Jr. and wife Tammy of Medina; son, Michael Paul Sherrill and wife Kim of Paducah, Ky.; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Hayley Doster (Jake) of St. Louis, Mo.; Mary Savannah Sherrill of Medina; Donald R. Sherrill, III of Medina; and Sloane Alisabel Sherrill of Paducah, Ky.; brother Roger P. Sherrill and wife Tyra of Ringgold, Ga.; special aunts, Betty Bunch of Hixson and Nancy Crane (Jim) of Hixson and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with SFC Richard Gatewood officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
