MFD’s new ladder truck
THE NEW RIDE – The Martin Fire Department was all smiles when its new ladder truck rolled into the station on Neal Street Monday afternoon. The ladder truck has been in the building and design stages for the last several months and it was unveiled to community members Monday. On hand for the presentation of the truck were (from left), Don V. Jones of Martin; firefighters Rip Jones Jeff Stricklin and Tony Prince; Martin Fire Chief Russell Schwahn; Martin Fire Battalion Chief Charles Freeman, Martin Fire Training Officer Lt. Jamie Summers; firefighter Patrick Dilday; Martin Mayor Randy Brundige and Martin alderman Randy Edwards.  Schwahn applied for and received a grant totaling nearly half a million dollars, which went toward the purchase of the ladder truck. The Martin Board recently approved a note for $235,000 to pay for the remainder of the truck. The ladder truck replaces the now-defunct truck. It is the hope of the City of Martin the non-functioning ladder truck can be sold within the year. As the University of Tennessee at Martin encompasses a large number of tall structures, the ladder truck’s purpose fills the need for a pumper that can access the tallest floors of those buildings.
