The Westview Lady Chargers were taken to the limit by the Dyersburg Lady Trojans in the Region 7A-AA finals that saw the Lady Trojans come out on top with a physical 3-2 overtime win Tuesday night at the MTD Soccer Complex.
Dyersburg, the No. 1 seed from the West, scored the game-winning goal at the 7:20 mark in the second 10-minute overtime period. Jolyta Taylor took the ball in for the game-winning goal when she caught Charger goalie Makenzie Vincent out of position for the second time of the game, giving her two goals.
“We did not mark the way we should have and we worked on marking Taylor in practice. You give her one step and she is going to take it. It is not like we did not know she was out there; we just did not execute,” Lady Charger head coach Matt Cupples said.
The Lady Chargers and Lady Trojans, evenly-matched and the biggest rivalry in the region, had one of the most physical games in the Region 7A-AA tournament, with both teams playing to near exhaustion by the end of the game.
“It can’t get more physical than this game. It is a big rivalry between us and, unfortunately, we came out on the short end tonight. It is tough. We work a lot in practice and the girls deserve to win. They worked their butts off this year, but all the credit goes to Dyersburg. They came ready to play,” Cupples said.
Westview, the No. 1 seed from the East, scored the first goal of the game when Shelby Donavant gave a corner kick feed to Alex Crosser in front of the goal for a head shot into the net just 4:15 into the game.
The score stayed at 1-0 until the 8:00 minute mark when Alyson Patton took a feed from Bethany Brasher to tie the at 1-1.
The game stayed tied at 1-1 until Taylor got an easy goal with 18:37 left in regulation when she caught Vincent out of position for the first time.
Michelle Kimsey of Westview tied the game at 2-2 with a feed from Emily Plunk with 10:37 to go in the game.
The Lady Chargers had 16 shots on goal for the game and the Lady Trojans had 15. Vincent had eight saves on goal for the game while Lady Trojan goalie Katie Windle had six.
It was the second meeting this season between the two teams. Westview won the first meeting 2-1.
The Lady Chargers made to the regional finals after beating South Fulton last week, while the Lady Trojans beat Crockett County to reach the finals.
The season is not over, though, for Westview.
The Lady Chargers will now have to play the Region 8A-AA tournament winners, Madison Academic in the sectionals 5 p.m. Saturday in Jackson. Madison beat Chester County 4-0 in the Region 8A-AA finals Tuesday evening.
The winner between Westview and Madison will advance to the TSSAA State Tournament to be played in Chattanooga Wednesday through Nov. 5.
“It is going to be tough. Any team that wins a region championship is going to be tough. I think if we have a good attitude at practice, I think we will be OK,” Cupples said. “We have got a little bit to build off of, but we also have to keep working and try to rest some girls in the next day or so. Then we will see how it goes.”
Westview played Madison earlier this year in a preseason tournament. Madison came out on top 1-0 in the 40-minute contest. Westview and Madison have met once before in the sectionals in 2009 with Madison earning the trip to the state tournament. Published in The WCP 10.27.11
