The adidas Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week awards keep racking up for UT Martin junior libero Kasey Elswick as the league has announced she had won the award for the eighth time this season and ninth time for her three-year career.
The nine career OVC Defensive Player of the Week accolades ties Els-wick with Heather Norris (Murray State, 2006-09) for the second-most defensive weekly awards in league history, trailing only Eastern Kentucky’s Brittany Nobilio (11 awards from 2006-09).
Elswick came up with yet another spectacular week for the Skyhawks, who went 2-1 to improve to 15-9 with a 10-4 OVC mark. The Louisville, Ky., native secured 86 digs in 11 sets during the week.
The No. 2 ranked player in the NCAA in digs per set (6.80), Elswick opened the week with 38 digs against Tennessee Tech, then added 25 more against Morehead State and 23 against Eastern Kentucky.
Already the program’s career leader in digs and single-match record-holder for digs, Elswick is rapidly approaching another school record.
The single-season record for digs is 642, set by Anna Gautreau in 2007. Elswick (626 digs in 2011) needs only 17 more digs to take that record. Published in The WCP 10.27.11
