The Westview Lady Chargers soccer team has advanced to the Region 7A-AA finals after beating the South Fulton Lady Red Devils on Thursday night in a hard-fought semifinal game that took several overtime periods to complete.
Tied at 1-1, Westview won 3-0 in the shootout for the regional finals berth tonight and a spot in the sectional round this weekend.
It finally came down to a five-and-five situation to determine who would advance to the regional finals, to be played in Martin tonight at 6, with Shelby Donavant kicking the deciding goal.
The Lady Chargers had a fight on their hands throughout the game and this was one of the few times they had a game like this all season.
“My girls had some heads hanging down throughout the game and I was worried about it. We really honestly have not been in any real situations too much like that the whole year. So to see us kind of react to adversity is big,” Lady Charger head coach Matt Cupples said.
It looked like it was going to be business as usual for the Lady Chargers when Donavant scored five minutes into the game. But South Fulton’s defense tightened up around the net for the rest of regulation play.
Westview made 20 shots on goal in regulation while holding South Fulton to only five attempts. The Lady Red Devils only goal in regulation came on a penalty kick with just less than 16 minutes left in regulation.
The game went into two 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute goal-to-goal periods with neither team able to score. Westview made four kick attempts on goal in the four extra periods, while South Fulton only made one.
In the five-and-five overtime, Westview hit its first two kicks with Katelyn Luthi making the first one and Kayla Guthrie hitting the second one. Emily Plunk missed the third kick for Westview. South Fulton missed three straight kicks with all three going over the net. The first one was tipped by goalie Makenzie Vincent, causing it to go over the net. Donavant nailed the fourth kick for the Lady Chargers sealing the victory.
“I told my girls that they played as hard as they ever have during the season. My hat is off to coach Moore and the job he has done in just the two years South Fulton has been playing. They don’t play like a second-year team,” Cupples said about the Lady Red Devils.
Westview will now play at home in the Region 7A-AA finals tonight at 6 against Dyersburg. The sectionals will start Saturday. If Westview wins tonight, the Lady Chargers will be at home on Saturday. A loss sends Westview on the road. Published in The WCP 10.25.11
