Pay analysis sought for state workers
NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam wants a study on state workers’ salaries with the intent of keeping state salaries competitive with private industry.
Haslam said the current economy gives the state breathing room, but as conditions improve the state could lose key personnel, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel (
The governor said a salary comparison similar to the one he had done as mayor of Knoxville could show where salaries need to be improved to remain competitive in a robust economy.
In comments Wednesday, Haslam expressed no opinion on a report by the Tennessee State Employees Association that nearly 1,000 state workers are receiving food stamps. Eligibility for assistance depends on the wage earner’s pay, but also on the number of dependents he or she has.
