The Messenger, October 24, 2011
Alex J. Jonsson, 70, of Redwood City, Calif., husband of the former Virginia Jernigan of Union City, died Oct. 9, 2011, at his home.
There will be no funeral. A celebration of his life is planned after the holidays in 2012.
The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
He was born Aug. 19, 1941, in Los Angeles and moved to San Mateo, Calif., in 1955, graduating from San Mateo High School and California State-Hayward. He had worked as news editor for KRON from 1967 until his retirement in 2005, when he continued to work at KPIX until January. He won six local Emmys, a national Emmy and two Peabody Awards and was shop steward and chairman/trustee of the health and welfare plan for Local 45.
He loved his wife and his family and formed long, lasting friendships everywhere he went — at work, on trips or on the golf course. He always enjoyed his work and his colleagues, but he still had time for playing with his grandsons, walking, working out, traveling, dining out, weekly movies, reading, music and golf.
He enjoyed life and always wore a smile.
When diagnosed with a recurrence of melanoma, he announced that he had no “bucket list.” His kind and gentle nature touched so many people and he will be missed by all who knew him. His family and friends say they are lucky to have had him in their lives.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, he is also survived by two sons and his daughter-in-law, Charlie and Tiffany Jonsson and Tom Jonsson; two grandsons, Reed Jonsson and Chaz Jonsson; his brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Yvette Jonsson; his nieces and nephew and their spouses, Erik and Yulia Jonsson, Alicia and Chris Foster and Francisca Jonsson; and his great niece, Eve Foster.
