The Martin Fine Arts Club met on a beautiful fall afternoon Oct. 5 in the lovely home of Mrs. Joe Exum.
Hostesses Mrs. Exum and Mrs. Scott McDonald welcomed the 23 members and guest speaker Dr. Doug Cook.  
The club members were offered delicious apple cake with caramel icing, cheese ball pumpkins and hot apple cider.  
After the social time, Mrs. Bob Peeler introduced Dr. Cook, chair of the Visual and Theater Arts Department at UTM.  
Dr. Cook presented the exciting plans for and an update on the remodel project of the Fine Arts Building.
The work on the Fine Arts Building, which opened in 1970, was started last year and Phase 1 will be complete by summer of 2012.  
The new building will encompass the Music, Visual and Theater Departments all in one building.  
Phase 1 will include the completion of all teaching facilities ,while performance spaces will be completed in Phase 2. This second phase includes the new recital hall and the renovation of the Harriett Fulton Theater.  The new facade will be different than the old one and a special feature will be a first floor art gallery with diffused light coming from a skylight.
He termed the building “The Showcase for the Arts in West Tennessee.”  His enthusiasm for the new building let all the members know that it will be a wonderful addition to the campus and to the city and the area.
After the reciting of the collect, President Mrs. Tom Gallien presided over a business meeting.  
Mrs. Michael Hinds, secretary, called roll and read the minutes from the September meeting.
After the approval of the minutes, treasurer Mrs. John Wall gave a financial report.
Also in attendance were Mrs. James Cannon, Mrs. Bob Cheeseman, Mrs. John Chester, Mrs. Harold Clifton, Mrs. Donnie Davis, Mrs. Tom Farmer, Mrs. Lowell Fields, Mrs. G.T. Hall, Mrs. Morris Liming, Mrs. E. B. Pritchett Jr., Mrs. George Pritchett, Mrs. James Pritchett, Mrs. Lee Pritchett, Mrs. James Shore, Mrs. Sanford Truitt, Mrs. Fred Vowell and Mrs. Phil Wade.
