The UT Martin golf team rebounded in the final round of the Skyhawk Classic with a 4-under-par 284 showing, climbing the leaderboard to finish alone in third place.
Barton Hamilton and Brendon Caballero each led the way for UTM after carding a pair of 4-under-par 68s. Hamilton’s round gave him a three-round showing of 1-over-par 217 and a top 10 finish.
The 2011 Skyhawk Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by UTM and hosted at Paris Landing State Park Golf Course in Buchanan. The 80-player field was made up of 14 teams, with 11 participants competing as individuals. The par 72 Paris Landing Golf Course played at a length of 6,685 yards.
“We played our best round of the tournament today,” said UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter. “After regrouping last night, we were confident we could post a score under-par, and we did that. We laid out a game-plan with our course management and putting and the guys really stuck to it, and it showed in their final-round scores.”
Graham Sleigh added a 2-over-par 74 in the final round, giving him a three-day total of 3-over-par 219 and landed him in a tie for 12th place overall. Caballero just missed a top 20 finish after his final round 4-under-par 68, finishing in 21st at 6-over-par 222. Tyler Shellnut ended the tournament one stroke back at 7-over-par 223 and John Michael Sisinni rounded out the scoring for the Skyhawks at 9-over-par 225.
UT Martin’s Orange team struggled to find its way in the third round, carding a 24-over-par 312, giving it a three-day total 54-over-par 918 and a 13th place finish. Christopher Schwartz led the Orange squad with a 10-over-par 226 tournament total. Taylor Deming carded a 14-over-par 230 showing, while Adam Clark and Clay Harbin each turning in 15-over-par 231 showings.
“The Orange team didn’t play as well as we had anticipated, but they were still able to learn a good bit from the experience,” added Carpenter. “Many of them are in their first year of collegiate golf, and tournaments like this can really help them in the future.”
In the team competition, Southern Illinois held on to its lead to capture its first Skyhawk Classic title at 4-under-par 860. Jackson State finished alone in second, 14 strokes back, at 10-over-par 874, followed by UT Martin at 12-over-par 876.
In the individual competition, Southern Illinois’ Jake Erickson used a 3-under-par 69 in the final round to spark a two-stroke victory at 7-under-par 209. Day one leader Patrick Newcomb of Murray State fell back into a tie for second with Union University’s Brett Barry at 5-under-par 211.
