Early mistakes doom SF’s Pioneer Bowl hopes
South Fulton was too giving in the first half and unable to take back enough in the second half.
The Jr. Red Devils lost a fumble and saw Gibson County recover an onside kick in the first 16 minutes, both leading to scores as GC won the Pioneer Bowl 26-8 Thursday night at Yates Field on the Gibson County High School campus.
South Fulton, which finished its season at 4-4, gave up three touchdowns before intermission and one more in the third before finally getting on the board in the fourth quarter.
“We played a great second half,” Red Devil head coach Jeremy McFarland said. “The difference in the halves is that we didn’t have any turnovers or give them good field position in the second half.”
The Middle School Redmen ran just seven plays in the first half, fumbling five times and losing one.
SF started well, forcing a GC punt, but then the Devils fumbled on their first three offensive plays before punting.
South Fulton then fumbled away its second possession and surrendered the onside kick.
Gibson County took advantage of all three SF errors to score and take an 18-0 lead into the break. GC then came out in the second half and put up another score in the third.
South Fulton’s lone score came in the fourth period when Kody Davidson went nine yards on a TD run. Chris Morris added the two-point conversion.
Jyriq Jones led the Devils in rushing with 31 yards on seven carries and had the only reception in Davidson’ three passes, a seven-yard catch.
Morris added 21 yards on seven carries, Chris Courtney had a 17-yard run, Davidson had 10 yards on 11 carries and Zaccius Mays added an eight-yard attempt for SF.
Davidson led the Devils with seven tackles, Hunter Hamilton added six stops, both Morris and Jones had five tackles and Zak Kreis had four tackles. Published in The Messenger 10.14.11
