They left Union City on a muggy summer morning six weeks ago and now the 163 soldiers in the Tennessee Army National Guard’s 913th Engineer Co. are in Kuwait. The Messenger has learned the soldiers flew out to Kuwait early Saturday.
The 913th Engineer Co. departed from the John Tanner National Guard Armory Aug. 18 as the unit made its way to Memphis and then to Fort Bliss, Texas.
The unit has been training at the West Texas military base for the past six weeks in preparation for its deployment to Kuwait.
The Union City-based unit is part of the 194th Engineer Brigade and is being deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The local unit is made up of soldiers from across Tennessee as well as from as far away as Kentucky and Alabama. Many of those in the unit are from Obion and Weakley counties.
Members of the company have been undergoing physical training in preparation for their tour of duty in Kuwait. The soldiers have also been involved in classroom instruction, equipment training and firearms training at Fort Bliss. The 913th Engineer Co. is known as a “horizontal engineer company,” according to company commander Capt. Jacob Partridge. Members of the unit were given a recent weekend off to return home and spend time with their families.
