A 2-1 score was both good and bad for UT Martin’s soccer team over the weekend.
Making their east Ken-tucky swing, the Skyhawks dropped a 2-1 decision to Eastern Kentucky on Friday and then won by that same score in overtime over Morehead State on Sunday.
With the split, UT Martin (8-5-2, 3-2-1 OVC) has tied its total win output from last season, when it went 8-8-2. UT Martin will now return home for its final three league matches, beginning with a matchup against league-leading SEMO this Friday at 4 p.m.
UTM 2, Morehead 1
Trailing 1-0 late in regulation, UTM scored in the 84th minute to force overtime and then put in the winning goal less than six minutes into the extra period when senior Melissa Govea came away with her sixth career goal to lift the Skyhawks over the two-time defending OVC champion.
The Skyhawks put five of their 10 shot attempts on goal, as eight different players attempted a shot.
Hannah McGowen continued her recent surge, as the Murfreesboro native was responsible for the Skyhawks’ first goal of the match. She then took the corner kick at the 95:32 mark that found Govea for the game-winner for her team-leading sixth assist in 2011.
After conceding a goal at the 3:19 mark, senior Lauren MacKenzie shut down the Eagle offense over the last 92-plus minutes.
At the 83:21 mark, the Skyhawks drew a foul inside the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity. McGowen guided her third goal of the season past Blevins to even up the score at 1-all.
McGowen took the fateful corner kick just 19 seconds later, finding Govea for a header that became the golden goal.
EKU 2, UTM 1
The Skyhawks outshot Eastern Kentucky 11-10, but a pair of second-half goals sank the Skyhawks in the loss at the EKU Soccer Field.
