CABBAGE PROGRAM — Two Obion County students were among those who participated in the annual Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program for the 2010-11 school year. Bonnie Plants provides its oversized cabbage varieties to school teachers who request them each year. The cabbages often grow bigger than a basketball, according to the company. Nick Laster (above) participated while in Susan Thomason’s class at Ridgemont Elementary School. His cabbage was 16 1/2 pounds and 62 inches around. He is the son of Tim and Jennie Laster of No. 7 community near Rives. He grew the cabbage in the garden of his neighbor, Everett Cochran. Shelby Palmer (below) grew her cabbage in the garden of her grandfather, Hoyt Sampson of Troy. She participated while a third-grader at Hillcrest Elementary School. Her cabbage weighed 7 1/2 pounds. She is the daughter of Andrea Roberts of Troy and Eddie Palmer of Memphis.
