Oktoberfest planned Saturday in downtown Martin

Oktoberfest planned Saturday in downtown Martin

What better way to usher in the autumn season than with a trip to downtown Martin as the community celebrates its annual Oktoberfest. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday in Festival Park.
The afternoon’s line up of activities are geared to delight little ones with carnival-style games designed to celebrate fall. The event is sponsored by the Martin Historic Business District, a Tennessee Downtowns Community and Rolling Thunder® TN Chapter 6.
Local businesses have joined hands to bring together a wide range of events that day. The carnival-style games in Festival Park on the corner of Main and Lindell streets will offer children a chance to meet clowns Oogie and Oogles Piddlepop.
Children as well as adults can have their faces painted and their hair sprayed in a festive slate of colors.
Festival Park will be filled with inflatables and games.
To satisfy Mom and Dad, the park will also have local vendors on hand for the Community Rummage Sale and local farmers at the Farmer’s Market. Spaces are $10 each and there are some still available for the rummage sale.
Local non-profit organization Rolling Thunder® TN Chapter 6 will sell concessions such as hamburgers and hot dogs.
Not only will the games spark the friendly, competitive spirit of children, Oktoberfest will feature a Halloween costume contest; a pumpkin carving contest and a sidewalk chalk drawing contest. Winners will be awarded prizes. Children can also try their luck at corn hole.
Participants are asked to bring their own pumpkins for the carving contest.
Local retailers will offer specials throughout the downtown Martin area.
A Martin photographer will be on hand with an outdoor fall-inspired setting to capture pageant and family portraits.
The first-ever Mr. and Miss Oktoberfest will also take place on the stage in downtown Festival Park. The pageant is an outdoor affair, weather permitting.
The Oktoberfest fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down. After children have wound down for the evening, parents can call their local baby sitter to take advantage of the nighttime events geared for adults only.
At The GAP, the John Sutton Band from Nashville will perform from 7-11 Saturday night. Across the street, Cadillac’s Bar and Grill will present the UTK game on the big screen. After the game, Crooked Creek will take the stage from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.
Oktoberfest is a chance to entertain the community from the young to the young at heart.
