BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Marshall County (Ky.) High School junior Travis Griffith shot an 85 in the first round of the boys’ state golf championship Tuesday at Bowling Green Country Club, falling short of making the cut for Wednesday’s second 18-hole round.
Griffith qualified for the state tourney as an individual by shooting a 76 in last week’s regional tournament at Silos Golf Course in western McCracken County.
Griffith, who missed a berth in the state tournament by one shot last year, struggled through the front nine of his round on Tuesday with three bogeys, two triple bogeys and a double bogey to reach the turn with an 11-over 47.
After parring just three holes on the front nine, however, Griffith had a batter second half to his round as he posted four pars and two birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey.
He began the back nine with a birdie on the 399-yard, par-4 No. 10 hole, and he closed his round with another birdie with a four on the 534-yard No. 18.
Griffiith is the son of Tony and Pam Griffith of Benton, Ky., and the grandson of Bill and Brenda Griffith of Dresden.
