The Messenger, October 6, 2011
Yet another effort to rob local citizens of their assets has taken place in Obion County. A local senior citizen received a call from someone identifying themselves as a representative of Medicare and suggesting that the resident was eligible to receive a “discount card” from that agency. The caller said the local resident would have to verify their checking account number and then repeated what was, in fact, the actual account number. The local resident refused to confirm that fact or to provide any additional information and immediately notified both the Obion County Sheriff’s Department, the Medicare office and the bank.
The call could not have been legitimate since Medicare representatives do not telephone citizens for information and do not provide discount cards.
Anyone receiving similar phone calls should end the call immediately and notify any banks, agencies or others who might be named by the caller, as well as local law enforcement. No personal or financial information should ever be provided to a caller that is not personally known to the recipient.
