It was a busy first weekend of October for members of the Obion County Rescue Squad and area firefighters.
Jim Foster with the local rescue squad told The Messenger Monday that rescue squad crews were out fighting several fires over the weekend.
Early Friday, the rescue squad extinguished a small grass fire off Highway 5 in Woodland Mills. Crew members were on the scene for just over 15 minutes.
Members of the rescue squad battled a large field fire along Glass Road south of Hornbeak Friday afternoon.
Heavy smoke from the fire and windy conditions caused havoc for motorists traveling along Glass Road.
Both lanes of traffic were blocked for a short time while rescue squad members worked for about two hours battling the fire, according to Foster. He said the fire covered about two acres. Assisting the rescue squad were the Troy Fire Department, Hornbeak Volunteer Fire Department and the state Forestry Service.
Also on the scene working on traffic control was the Obion County Sheriff’s Department.
The rescue squad was barely finished extinguishing the Glass Road fire when it was dispatched to a grass fire in the area of Taylor Brothers Road, off the Ken-Tenn Highway. It took the rescue squad just over and hour to extinguish that grass fire, which covered nearly two acres.
No structures were damaged in any of the three grass fires, according to Foster.
Then on Sunday morning, about 9:30, firefighters from Troy, Samburg, Obion and Hornbeak and members of the local rescue squad responded to a house fire on Dugger Road northwest of Troy, according to Foster. The rescue squad was on the scene for medical standby for about three hours.
The house at 765 Dugger Road, a dead-end road, is owned by Ricky Dugger. The house was described as a total loss, according to Foster.
There were no injuries reported in connection with the house fire. Published in The Messenger 10.5.11
