Dresden High administrators believe Herron is one of just five students in all of West Tennessee outside of Memphis to achieve this distinction.
The Dresden senior says he is very thankful for Weakley County educators and his classmates.
“I am very grateful to the many great teachers who’ve stayed after class and after school to help us. Our excellent, caring teachers don’t get nearly enough credit for giving so much and doing so much. And I’m also grateful to my very talented, hard-working classmates who challenge me to do my best and who are doing and are going to do great things.”
More than 1,500,000 students in 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT).
Herron joins the semifinalists who are less than one percent of U. S. high school seniors and include only the very highest scoring entrants in each state.
He now will compete to become a National Merit Finalist. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record and earn Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the entrance test. Dresden guidance counselor P. K. Kelley says Herron has an excellent chance of becoming a finalist, since he began this, his senior year, first in his class and having done well on the SAT. Finalists will be announced next spring.
He also has been selected for and attended American Legion Boys’ State, the Congressional Academy in Washington, D.C., the Governor’s School for International Studies at the University of Memphis, and a program for selected high school students at Duke University.
At Dresden High School, Herron is on the student council and the cross country team.
He is an Eagle Scout member of Troop 40 led by Scoutmasters Eddie Capps and Terry Brewer. He is a member of Dresden First United Methodist Church pastored by Reverend Mark Earheart and a member of Sherry Pritchett Hatchel’s Sunday School class.
Herron is the son of Nancy and Roy Herron. He is the grandson of Fran Miller and the late L. J. Miller of Memphis and Mary Herron and the late Chancellor Grooms Herron of Dresden.
