The UTM Turf Club is looking to fund its trip to Las Vegas — one swing at a time.
The club will be hosting a golf scramble Saturday at Persimmon Hills Country Club to offset the cost of its trip to the GCSAA Turf Bowl Competition in Las Vegas.
Registration begins at 7:30, and tee-off is at 8 a.m.
The scramble teams consists of four golfers at $200 per team or $50 per person, with lunch provided.
Door prizes, along with closest putt and longest drive prize, will be given away.
To enter a team or for more information, call Dr. Wesley Totten at (731) 881-7936 or Corey Johnson at (931) 224-0617.
The GCSAA Turf Bowl will be held in Febuary 2012, and UTM Turf Club students have already begun preparing for the trip by practicing on a weekly basis.
UTM finished 42nd out of a field of over 80 entries, including teams with great horticulture programs such as Texas A&M, Iowa State, Purdue and Penn State last year.
The UT Martin Turf Club is a select group of young collegiate students whose goal in life is to work in the horticulture industry.
These students are advised by UTM faculty member Dr. Wesley Totten, who has taken the horticulture program to new heights at UT Martin.
Over a span of four years, many new doors have been opened for these students, and in return the students have given 110 percent back into everything they do, according to a team spokesman.
This has led to internships and job opportunities at many of the top golf courses in America.
Among those courses where UTM students have worked are Long Cove, Wade Hampton, Val-halla, Congressional and the world-famous TPC Sawgrass along with other world class golf courses.
The students have worked some of the biggest tournaments in American golf, including the 2011 U.S. Open and The Players Championship.
These opportunities have opened many new doors for these students.
Student-based success in the program and a need for a practice facility for the UTM golf team have afforded both programs a state of the art educational learning and practice center. Published in The WCP 9.29.11
