Bethel University in McKenzie will celebrate Homecoming 2011 on Oct. 7-8 on the school’s McKenzie campus — with some events taking place as early as Wednesday and with many of the events being made available to the entire community.
This year’s homecoming theme is “It’s Time to Get Right Back to Where We Started From!”
A Blessing of the Animals ceremony will take place Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Bethel Alumni Garden.
“This event is open to Bethel family and alumni and to the community as well,” said Myra Carlock, Bethel University events planner. “This is an ancient and liturgical service where we commemorate the life of St. Francis of Assisi and his love for all of God’s creatures.”
According to Ms. Car-lock, light refreshments will be available, including refreshments provided by PetSmart for pets in attendance. Additionally, a photographer will be on hand for pictures. Those in attendance should remember to keep their pets on leashes and to bring carriers if necessary.
“From Here to There and Back Again” will be Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Odom Lecture Hall.
“We think students and community members will enjoy this panel discussion with some of our notable alumni as they share about their career paths and about how Bethel has been instrumental in their life’s journeys,” Ms. Carlock said.
Panel members will include alumni Jeff Devlin, a TV producer and partner with Original Film; Jim Smith, who works in public relations with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in New York City; Capt. Shelia Robertson, special assistant to the Navy Surgeon General for Pastoral Care; and Carol Penn-Romine, a freelance food writer and creator of The Hungry Passport food blog.
The 11th Annual Home-coming Golf Tournament will be Oct. 7 with registration beginning at 10 a.m. An 11 a.m. lunch will be for golfers at Carroll Lake Country Club, followed by the shotgun start at Carroll Lake Golf Club at noon.
The tournament is a four-person scramble and is open to both alumni and community members. Entry fee is $55 per person or $220 per team and includes green fees, cart, lunch and prizes.

“We will also be honoring the work of Bethel’s first choral and band director, the late professor L.J. Turner,” Ms. Carlock said. “We are very excited to have professor Turner’s family on campus for this Friday event. They will be presenting a commissioned portrait of professor Turner during Recital Hour at noon.”
Recital Hour and the Turner presentation will be held in the Marrs-Stockton Building.
Other Friday events include an interactive walking tour of Bethel history beginning at 1:15 p.m. at the Marrs-Stockton Building; a Wildcat basketball scrimmage at 3 p.m. in Dishman Gymnasium; a Golden Grads reunion for the class of 1961 at 5 p.m. in Odom Hall; a 5 p.m. 1970s decade reunion at Bethel’s Chamberlin House at 1035 North Stonewall St.; a 5 p.m. reunion for ’80s and ’90s alumni at Broadway Place behind Super Drugs; a Homecoming Reunion Dinner and Dance for alumni and friends at 6:30 p.m. at the Wrinkle Building in downtown McKenzie; and an 8:30 p.m. presentation by Renaissance called “Bethel’s Got Talent!” in Bouldin Auditorium in the Dickey Fine Arts Building.
“This year’s Friday night Renaissance show will be different than in years past,” Ms. Carlock said. “Vocal Authority, Renaissance Bluegrass, the Renaissance Gospel Quartet and the Renaissance Gospel Trio will all be showcased.”
Saturday events include the 10 a.m. homecoming parade; a wildcat soccer game at noon at Wildcat Soccer Field; a Lady Wildcats Purple and White Basketball Scrimmage at noon in Dishman Gym-nasium; alumni softball and baseball games on their respective fields at 1 p.m.; a 1 p.m. performance by Renaissance in Bouldin Auditorium; and the 4 p.m. Wildcat football game, complete with the crowning of the homecoming king and queen and other ceremonies.
“There will also be the alumni luncheon where we will present alumni awards and have Athletic Hall of Fame induction,” Ms. Carlock said.
