The American Chemical Society (ACS) honored the University of Tennessee at Martin chapter of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) with both the Commendable Chapter Award and the Green Chemistry Award for its 2010-11 activities.
The 2010-11 winners of the Commendable Chapter Award will be recognized in the November/December issue of in Chemistry”magazine. Chapter representatives will also be presented with a plaque at the ACS Student Chapter Award Ceremony, held as part of the 243rd ACS National Meeting in San Diego, Calif.
The ACS Committee on Education and the ACS Green Chemistry Institute selected only 46 chapters from more than 1,000 nationwide to receive the Green Chemistry Award for the 2010-11 academic year.
The UT Martin SMACS chapter has received this award 10 times since the award’s inception in 2001.
UT Martin chapter projects last year included conducting chemistry demonstrations at local elementary schools, sponsoring an Earth Day outreach program for the local community and helping area Boy Scout troops earn their chemistry merit badges.
