UC’s Clendenin one-man show vs. Vikings
Brantley Clendenin did everything but sell popcorn Tuesday night for the Union City Middle School football team.
Clendenin rushed for 161 yards and four touchdowns, accounted for a pair of two-point conversions and intercepted a pair of passes to lead the Jr. Tornadoes to a 44-0 romp over Humboldt at War Memorial Stadium.
The junior Tornadoes are now 4-2 overall, 3-1 in West Tennessee Athletic Conference play heading into its regular season finale next Tuesday at home against Halls.
In other games on the local middle school gridirons from Tuesday, South Fulton rolled over Fulton County 32-8, and Lake Road blanked Fulton City 20-0.
The followiing is a recap of those games reported to The Messenger.
UC 44, Humboldt 0
Clendenin, who had scoring runs covering eight, 15, six and five yards, also had a fifth TD called back when his punt return was negated by penalty.
He proved to be a more-than-capable fill-in for Jacob Hyde, who sat out the game with a knee injury.
Jamison Blackwell caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Will Sisco and Taj Reid ran a likewise distance for a score for the victors.
D’Carrious Stephens had a two-point conversion following the second of Clendenin’s touchdowns.
Sisco ended up completing 4-of-7 passes for 63 yards.
Will Shea Riley recorded a team-high eight tackles to pace the shutout effort of the Twister defense. Reid and Jeremy Bumpus were in on six stops each, while Blackwell totaled five.
SF 32, Fulton Co. 8
Jyriq Jones returned the opening kickoff 76 yards to paydirt, one of his three touchdowns, as the Red Devils (4-2) tuned up for their Thursday showdown with Ridgemont that will net a Rebel Bowl berth for the winner.
Jones also had scoring runs of five and three yards and accounted for a two-point conversion, too.
Zaccius Mays had SF’s other TD, a 14-yard scamper. Chris Morris, who led all Red Devil rushers with 77 yards on just six carries, was good for a pair of conversions, one on a run, the other on a pass from Kody Davidson.
Davidson also had a conversion.
Davidson was a bigger factor on the defensive side with a pair of interceptions. Chris Courtney had four tackles and a pick, while Jones also was in on four stops.
Thursday’s game with Ridgemont is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m.
LR 20, Fulton City 0
The Generals got their second win in seven games with strong defensive play.
Brett Jackson totaled a season-high 11 tackles and had a pass deflection that Blaine Hanks snagged and returned 33 yards for a touchdown. Hanks also had a fumble recovery.
Brennen Whaley was credited with four tackles.
Jackson also ran for 70 yards with a 13-yard TD included. He added the two-point conversion after Hanks’ interception return to the endzone.
Seth Clouse rushed six times for 66 yards with a 21-yard score.
Lake Road will observe 8th Grade Night at its final game, next Tuesday. Kick off is slated for 5 p.m. Published in The Messenger 9.28.11
